Project Spotlight
25 MW / 100 MWh
Reliable reserve power & improved grid reliability
The Ruien Energy Storage project is Wärtsilä’s first in Belgium and one of the largest systems in the country to-date. The 25 MW / 100 MWh energy storage system helps the customer to regulate fluctuations and supply peak power with stored renewable energy in the grid. With improved reliability, the system also improves revenues.
The facility utilises Wärtsilä’s GridSolv Quantum energy storage system and Wärtsilä’s sophisticated energy management software, the GEMS Digital Energy Platform.
Ruien Energy Storage is primarily designed and owned by Nippon Koei Energy Europe B.V. and Aquila Clean Energy, who developed the joint venture project.

This project is notable for Wärtsilä as our first project in Belgium, and another important milestone on adding state-of-the-art flexibility to the power system. We see a major opportunity and paramount need to increase deployment of energy storage in Europe, allowing to harness the full benefit of intermittent renewable energy across the continent.
The Ruien Energy Storage battery includes hardware and software technology, driving smart asset management. The GEMS Digital Energy Platform ensures optimal performance for the energy supply across a range of specified use-cases, including reserve power, frequency control response, capacity dispatch, and voltage support.
The system also has comprehensive system maintenance with performance guarantees across 15 years with Wärtsilä’s Service+ GAP solution.
